So, you’ve gathered your papers, found a notebook and are wondering what to do next. Starting your first junk journal can feel a little intimidating—but it doesn’t have to be. There are many types of junk journal you can keep. Today, we will look at keeping a memory junk journal.
What should you write about?
The idea is to write something memorable from your day. It’s a nice way to round up the day. And it will be fun or interesting to read it in the future. Some days you might only write two sentences. Other days you may prefer to decorate a page with photos, tickets, stickers or a small collage. And If you’d like to decorate your pages but don’t know where to begin, printable journal pages, tags and ephemera are an easy way to add colour and personality to your journal.

I tend to write in my junk journal at the end of the day, but if you are more a morning person than I am, you can start your day by reflecting on the day before and about what you want to remember.
Focus on the good moments
Having noticed a long time ago that unfortunately human nature is such that we are more likely to remember bad things rather than good things, I personally try to find something nice, funny or both to write about. Of course you can choose to remember whatever you want. You can also draw, make collages, etc.
Keeping a memory junk journal is also a nice way to realise that things happen in our lives, even if sometimes it doesn’t feel like it.
So get your pen, your colouring pencils, your glue stick or tape, your pictures and start recording memories.

Ideas to get you started
To help you start, these are a few ideas of things to record:
- people you met
- people you talk to
- a conversation you’ll remember
- something that made you laugh
- something you’re grateful for
- a beautiful flower you spotted on a walk
- a new craft idea
- something you read or watched that had an impact on you
- an idea you have
- something you want to do
- someone you want to reach out to
- somewhere you want to go…
Find your own rhythm
And remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t even have to be pretty. It’s your time to think about yourself, to try a new way of being creative. You don’t have to write every day either. The hardest thing is to start. Go on and you will find your rhythm and your style!
